The Heinkel He 177 'Greif' (Griffon) represented Nazi Germany's potential strategic bomber. Had its initial issues been resolved and production scaled, it could have enabled the Luftwaffe to conduct long-range, mass bombing operations. Despite developmental challenges and competing interests, the aircraft saw service from mid-1943 over various fronts, including England, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and Russia. It remained in service until the war's end, with some units undertaking perilous low-level missions against Soviet armor in late 1944 and 1945.
