Harry Gruyaert, 2015
Born in Antwerp in 1941, Harry Gruyaert was among the first European photographers to explore the creative potential of color during the 1970s and 1980s. This volume compiles his significant works, including images from the notable 1972 series TV Shots and the later Made in Belgium. Influenced by American photographers and cinema, Gruyaert's approach defined new territory for color photography, characterized by an emotive, non-narrative, and boldly graphic perception of the world. His photographs stand as autonomous, self-sufficient images, often detached from specific context or thematic logic. Since joining Magnum Photos in 1982, he has embraced digital photography, finding it allows for greater risk-taking and the capture of novel light qualities.
