This book examines the French royal court of the 16th century as an outcome of evolving institutional and political structures that originated in the early Middle Ages. It analyzes the court's key functions related to power, ceremony, and representation, as well as its role in the formation of absolute monarchy. Special attention is given to the development of the ladies' court and the increasing influence of queens. The political events of the Wars of Religion and the reasons for the decline of the Valois court are also covered.
