This book by historian Alla Krasko focuses on the period when the estate on the Fontanka River was owned by the Counts Sheremetev. While tracing ownership from one count to another, the narrative centers on the servants who maintained the legendary Sheremetev Palace. Over two centuries, the estate housed various free servants, including architects, doctors, clergy, and musicians, alongside dynasties of serf managers and personal attendants. The research is built upon thousands of archival documents, many published for the first time, shedding light on the lives of individuals within the "house of His Excellency Count Sheremetev."
