Jane Porter, 2021
This book offers a new interpretation of narratives concerning inflated or diminished ambition in 19th-century Russian literature. Jane Porter compares the history of the concept of "ambition" in post-Napoleonic France and in Russia after the Decembrist revolt. The study concludes that Russian literature of the Nicholas I era (1825β1855) is founded on the differing understandings of this economic passion in Russia versus abroad. The author prompts reflection on the degree of congruence between identical concepts, feelings, and forms in their "original" and "borrowed" versions.
