Malcolm Turvey, 2008
This work examines the film theories of Jean Epstein, Dziga Vertov, Bela Balazs, and Siegfried Kracauer, proposing they form a distinct tradition termed 'revelationism.' This tradition, which views cinema as an art of mass enlightenment capable of revealing reality's true nature beyond human sight, contrasts with modernism and realism. The book traces revelationism's roots in Romanticism, Bergson's philosophy, and modern science. It also analyzes its influence on later theorists like Gilles Deleuze and contemporary film theory. The author critically evaluates revelationism, identifying conceptual confusions in arguments about vision and cinema's revelatory powers.
