Overview

Twelve-year-old Milo Pine is the adopted son of the owners of an inn in Nagsport, a city of smugglers. Their home, the House of Green Glass, is a vast, ramshackle estate that looks as though it were hastily cobbled together from mismatched pieces of buildings gathered from a dozen different towns. Over the winter holidays the inn usually stands empty, and Milo is hoping for a proper rest, but on the very first frosty night the bell rings insistently. Five guests arrive one after another, and each appearance is wrapped in a mystery closely intertwined with the history of the house. A chance discovery — a fragment of a navigation map — and a meeting with Maddie, the cook's younger daughter, spur Milo to launch his own investigation. He must find out why all these people have come and where the strange map leads, and in the process he will learn something important about the mysterious guests, the house, and himself.
