Maurice PalΓ©ologue, 2018, Military-Political Memoirs
Maurice PalΓ©ologue served as the French Ambassador to Russia during the pivotal years leading up to and including World War I and the February Revolution. As the representative of Russia's main ally, he was privy to the intricacies of the Russian Empire's political and military affairs, gaining access to its highest circles, including the imperial family. His circle of acquaintances and interlocutors comprised grand dukes, military leaders, ministers, members of the State Duma, influential industrialists, financiers, and diplomats, both Russian and foreign. The ambassador's interest naturally extended to "shadow" figures influencing imperial policy, such as Grigori Rasputin. PalΓ©ologue meticulously kept a diary throughout his tenure, recording official meetings and negotiations alongside high-society events, from which he gleaned significant information. These diaries later formed the basis of his memoirs about his time in Russia, offering a valuable, albeit somewhat biased, historical source and engaging reading for history enthusiasts.
