The novel is full of secrets and mysteries connected with an ancient Egyptian Christian talisman, which the protagonist, 17-year-old ensign Sergei Rzhevsky, receives at the front from his elder brother. From the talisman, like a stone thrown into water, plot circles spread, linking together different times and events: the life of the St. Petersburg bohemia and the offensive of General Yudenich's army on Petrograd, the mysteries of Ancient Egypt and Viking raids, the intrigues of 18th-century Masonic lodges and the camp stages of the Turukhansk region, the struggle of the counter-revolutionary underground and the Parisian everyday life of Russian emigration.
