В политической истории Украины XX века Петр Шелест занимает особое место. Пройдя нелегкий жизненный путь, он стал первым секретарем ЦК Компартии Украины в 1963 году. Поддерживая политику Н. Хрущева, он затем участвовал в приходе к власти Л. Брежнева. Шелест выступал за подавление Пражской весны 1968 года, но в то же время блокировал тотальное удушение инакомыслия в Украине. Он признавал сталинский авторитет, но требовал от московского руководства соблюдения декларированных принципов в отношениях центра и союзных республик. Petro Shelest holds a unique position in the political history of 20th-century Ukraine. After a challenging life journey, he became the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine in 1963. He supported N. Khrushchev's political line but was among those who facilitated L. Brezhnev's rise to power. Shelest advocated for suppressing the Prague Spring in 1968, yet simultaneously prevented the complete stifling of dissent in Ukraine. He acknowledged Stalin's authority while demanding that Moscow adhere to officially declared principles in relations between the center and the then 'union republics'. Opposing the dismantling of the USSR, he also contributed to strengthening Ukrainian national traditions and fostering respect for Ukraine's past. His memoirs offer insights into many questions of recent history.
