This story draws inspiration from a beautiful yet sorrowful Japanese legend about the higanbana flower, planted by the sun goddess Amaterasu in the Valley of High Heavens. She tasked two nature spirits, Manju and Shage, with guarding the flower, but they fell in love against all celestial laws. Angered, Amaterasu punished them by separating the lovers forever. Only after death, in the underworld of Yomi, could they reunite. There, in the land of Yellow Waters, Manju and Shage vowed to find each other in their next lives to fully embrace their feelings. However, their plans are threatened by a lovesick kitsune who also desires Manju and will stop at nothing.
