The capybara, a neotropical mammal, possesses significant potential for production and domestication. Its favorable characteristics include high prolificacy, rapid growth, a herbivorous diet, social behavior, and a generally docile nature. Found from the Panama Canal to northern Argentina east of the Andes, it is absent only from Chile. The species is consumed across its range, particularly by rural communities for subsistence, and also as a delicacy in urban areas.
