Set in the latter half of the 15th century, this novel follows Count Charles de Castelmar d'Argigny as he inherits responsibilities from a dying Jesuit general. To protect his adopted son, Bernard, from Archbishop Ledesma, the Count entrusts the boy to two Jesuits. Their mysterious deaths lead Bernard into the hands of the Priory of Sion, an organization that broke away from the Knights Templar centuries ago. The search for Bernard takes the Count and his loyal companion Isidora to the Ethiopian city of Roha-Lalibela, the seat of the Priory and the location of a mysterious artifact – the Celestial Zion, also known as the Ark of the Covenant.
