Overview

In 1956, the Bolshoi Theatre embarked on its first foreign tour after a significant break, visiting Great Britain. This trip marked the beginning of a major campaign orchestrated by N.S. Khrushchev to promote the new Soviet brand of "Russian ballet." Photographs of renowned prima ballerinas like Galina Ulanova and Ekaterina Maximova were featured in socialist glossy magazines. A special propaganda film-performance, "The USSR with an Open Heart," was made for Maximova's benefit performance. Reflecting this cultural push, Soviet entertainment literature increasingly featured the Bolshoi Theatre. In the novella "The Boomerang Doesn't Return," an enemy spy's first target is the Bolshoi. However, the resident of Marsonville's schemes are thwarted by the integrity of the chief engineer's daughter, whose love for ballet isn't enough to be deceived. Operation "Boomerang" is destined to fail, with no return for its operatives.
