Действие романа разворачивается в XI веке, после смерти Ярослава Мудрого. Власть на Руси переходит к его сыновьям Изяславу, Святославу и Всеволоду. Set in the 11th century, following the death of Yaroslav the Wise, power in Rus' passes to his elder sons: Izyaslav, Svyatoslav, and Vsevolod. Initially, the brothers strive for unity, repelling steppe raids. However, a schism brews beneath the surface of their alliance. Izyaslav, holding the Kievan throne, heeds his cunning and power-hungry wife more than his brothers. Svyatoslav harbors ambitions for the Kievan throne, which gain traction as Izyaslav proves to be a weak military leader. The outcome hinges on which of the two brothers Vsevolod will support.
