Concerned about his son Chad's association with a woman of questionable repute, Mrs. Newsome dispatches her envoy, Strether, from Massachusetts to Paris. Strether's objective is to bring Chad back, but his mission is complicated as he becomes captivated by Paris. He finds Chad more refined than corrupted by the city's influence and that of his companion, the comtesse de Vionnet. As the summer progresses, Mrs. Newsome decides to send another representative to confront Chad, and a Strether whose perspective has significantly shifted.
