Святые Гурий и Самон преследовались при императоре Диоклетиане, а диакон Авив — при императоре Лицинии. Согласно преданию, Гурий и Самон были обезглавлены, а Авив сожжен на костре. Их тела были погребены вместе.

This akathist is dedicated to the holy martyrs of Edessa who lived in Mesopotamia from the late 3rd to the first quarter of the 4th century. They suffered during the persecutions of Christians. Saints Guriy and Samon were persecuted under Emperor Diocletian, while Deacon Aviv suffered under Emperor Licinius. According to tradition, Guriy and Samon were beheaded, and Aviv was burned at the stake. Their bodies were buried together.
