As World War II looms, a family evacuates their London home for the countryside. Siblings Wolfie and Dodo adjust to their new surroundings, finding joy in raising an orphaned foal they name Hero. The horse proves his courage by saving the children from a fire. However, the escalating war effort demands horses for combat, leading to Hero's forced departure and the children's heartbreak.
