According to legend, the three-legged toad is the moon fairy Chan'e, punished for her betrayal and flight from her husband, a world-saving hero. She was doomed to spend her life in the form of a toad. The wandering coin god Liu Hai, an assistant to the god of wealth Cai Shen, bestowed upon her the miraculous blessing of spitting gold coins. This toad resides on the Moon, and her coins can reach people through an open window, carried by moonlight. The toad strives to bestow blessings, hoping that through good deeds, she will earn the gods' forgiveness and regain her fairy form.
