In Longeverne and Velrans, animosity has existed for ages, with inhabitants of one town despising those of the other. This hostility is passed down from childhood, and every boy considers it his duty to teach the enemy a lesson. The war here is fought for trophies—buttons torn from the opponent's clothing. The novel, inspired by the author's teaching experience, was published in France in 1912. It illustrates how hatred grows and can destroy fragile peace.
