In 1933 Berlin, nine-year-old Anna's ordinary life as a schoolgirl is disrupted when her family flees the Nazis. Their journey takes them through Switzerland, France, and finally England over two years. During this time, Anna experiences different cultures, learns French, and understands the meaning of being a refugee. Throughout her travels, she holds onto the memory of a beloved pink rabbit left behind in Berlin.
