“After finishing ‘The Giver,’ I somehow publicly declared that it wouldn’t have sequels – that was in 1993. In 2000, the second book, ‘Gathering Blue,’ was published. I didn’t intend to connect these two stories – I was creating a completely different world, also very interesting to me, where everything was entirely different. But at some point, I realized I could answer some questions – and over the years I’ve been asked many times what actually happened in the end of ‘The Giver.’ So at the end of ‘Gathering Blue,’ I mentioned Jonas. To be precise, I didn’t name him, but the children who truly wanted to know about his fate understood who I was talking about.” (Interview with The Wire, 2012).
